Nico’s Story
Nicholas (Nico) was intended to be a foster kitten. I took him in along with another kitten who I named Noel, because they both came to me around Christmas. They were with me for an extended time and I was unable to give them up when the time came – foster fails! Nico was a darling medium haired tuxedo boy – his personality was so sweet.
Nico was also a shy little boy. He had to be coaxed out when company came, and was easily pushed around by the other cats. His timid personality did not hold him back from being a a lover; his snuggles were the best! He also loved to catch water droplets from a drippy kitchen sink.
When he was 5 years old, his veterinarian detected a grade 2 heart murmur. A full cardiac workup revealed no heart muscle changes, so medication was started to help make his heart’s job easier. He was such a good boy – he willingly ate his daily medications in pill pockets. After the first few years, I was no longer able to afford the recommended twice-yearly echocardiograms, so Nico was monitored with regular physical exams, and continued his medicaiton. Fortunately, he remained free of symptoms - he played and ran around the house like the other kitties.
Darling Nico lived 7 years with heart disease, a welcome surprise! The murmur worsened gradually over the years to a grade 5. He was placed on additional medications, with the goal of helping his tiny heart keep on ticking. Eventually there was a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. I knew he was at risk of sudden death, but I still wasn’t prepared when it happened.
I didn’t see Nico one morning and checked his favorite hiding spot. He had passed away there, in his safe place.
I feel fortunate to have loved him for 12 years.
